Has the term solar farm or a solar park caught your fancy lately?

Then you are not alone. They are getting popular in the recent times.

Solar farms are large areas of land with ground mounted solar panels.

They are also called solar parks or solar ranches. In technical terms, they are a photovoltaic power station or the utility-scale solar units.

It was in California, USA that the first solar farm came into existence. That was back then in 1982.

Since then a lot of solar farms have developed. Many countries lead the bandwagon for the largest photovoltaic power plants in the World. The prominent ones include China, India, Germany and France.

What are solar farms

A solar farm is an array of multiple ground mounted solar PV systems. These solar panel photovoltaic systems convert the Sun’s rays into power.

The power generated through Sun is in D.C. An inverter converts that power into A.C.

The A. C. power generated is then connected to the main utility grid.

Factors that affect solar panel farm income

The size of the land is an obvious factor that affects the solar panel farm income. But apart from that, few other factors determine their financial success. They are:

1. Power output efficiency of solar panels

The more the solar panels installed in a location. The more is the power output of a solar farm. Besides, the better quality of panels used; better is their output.

At the time of erection of a solar park, due importance to a solar farm design is important. An efficient design gives significant improvement to the power generation capability of solar park.

2. The elevation of the location

The angle at which the Sun casts its rays on a location, affects the output of a Solar park. The less steep the ground, better its power generation.

It also depends in which hemisphere the location is. In northern hemisphere, the panels should face South. Thus, a vice-versa for the southern hemisphere.  

3. The climate of the location

The climate of a solar field location has a strong bearing on its efficiency. The Sun is more generous to tropical regions vis-a-vis others. There are many regions that receive a cloud cover most parts of the year. They per se are not attractive locations for profitable solar parks.

4. The kind of mounting for solar panels

The location plays a significant role in the output of a solar field. This feature is irreversible.

Though with installation techniques, one can counter few flaws in a location.

The mounting options in the solar panels arrangement maximizes a land’s solar output.

The popular structuring for PV systems include:

  • Fixed Arrays

As the names suggests, the mounting of solar modules is at a fixed angle to the Sun. The angle at which the solar rays are dense at the location, determines its selection.

These are good for locations that receive major portion of sunlight at fixed angles.  

The angle will of course vary from region to region.

An option to change the elevation of panels exists in some fixed mounting structures. They allow 2-4 angle changes, depending on the seasons a specific location witnesses.

  • Single axis solar tracker

These trackers follow the Sun in a single axis for all times in a year. Hence, they do not factor in the change of seasons.

Though due to single axis, they occupy lesser space in comparison to dual axis ones.

  • Dual axis solar tracker

These mounting structures are popular in the sub-tropical regions. They are so designed to maximize the capture of Sun’s beams.

They have 2 axes. One tracks the Sun in the horizontal direction, while the other does in the vertical.

Irrespective of the position of the Sun. Dual axis trackers track the Sun from 2 angels. Thus, optimize the final output.

Popular Solar Parks

Solar farms of 100 MWp and above are popular. The last decade has seen a growth in their popularity.

Longyangxia Dam Solar park is the biggest in the World with 850 MWp capacity.

Charanka Solar park ranks 7th in the world with 345 MWp capacity. It is in India in the state of Gujarat.

The park Charanka park has a group of small sub photovoltaic power stations. These smaller PV stations occupy a 4,900 acre area in the Patan district of Gujarat.

The park has the capacity to save the atmosphere from about 8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Moreover, it saves natural gas to the tune of 900,000 tonnes per year.  

In Conclusion :

Although getting popular, the world still needs more Solar parks. They help the entire mankind at large. Apart from of course providing financial gains to the one who owns it.
